💫Pagan Essentials: The Witch’s Online Resource
Before casting a circle or performing ritual magic, a practitioner must establish a sacred space. This is most commonly done by Calling the Quarters and acknowledging the Watchtowers.
What are the Quarters?
In witchcraft, the “Quarters” refer to the four cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West. Each direction is associated with a specific element and a set of spiritual correspondences. By calling them, you are inviting the elemental energies of the universe to witness, protect, and empower your magical work.
Elemental Correspondences Table
| Direction | Element | Tool | Season | Qualities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| East | Air | Athame, Incense | Spring | Intellect, Beginnings, Communication |
| South | Fire | Wand, Candle | Summer | Passion, Willpower, Transformation |
| West | Water | Chalice | Autumn | Emotion, Intuition, Healing |
| North | Earth | Pentacle, Salt | Winter | Stability, Prosperity, |
What are the Watchtowers?
While the “Quarters” are the physical directions, the Watchtowers are the spiritual guardians or “Sentinels” that stand at the edges of the universe.
- What they are: Spiritual fortresses or ancient entities that guard the elemental realms.
- What they do: They act as celestial “bouncers.” They keep unwanted negative energies out of your circle and provide a portal for elemental power to flow in.
Example: Calling the Quarters and Watchtowers

This ritual should be performed after you have physically traced your circle but before you begin your main magical work.Stand
Stand in the center of your space, take a deep breath, and face the East.
I. The East (Air)
Face East. Raise your Athame, Wand, or two fingers.
“Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the East, the Powers of Air! We call upon you to rush through this sacred space with the breath of life and the clarity of mind. Watch over this circle and lend us your wisdom. Hail and Welcome!
II. The South (Fire)
Turn clockwise (deasil) to the South.
“Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the South, the Powers of Fire! We call upon you to ignite this sacred space with the heat of passion and the light of transformation. Watch over this circle and lend us your strength.Hail and Welcome!”
III. The West (Water)
Turn clockwise to the West.
“Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the West, the Powers of Water! We call upon you to flow through this sacred space with the tides of intuition and the depths of emotion. Watch over this circle and lend us your healing. Hail and Welcome!
IV. The North (Earth)
Turn clockwise to the North.
“Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the North, the Powers of Earth! We call upon you to ground this sacred space with the roots of endurance and the riches of the land. Watch over this circle and lend us your protection. Hail and Welcome!
V. Center (Spirit)
Return to the center, facing East again, and raise your arms to the sky.
“The Quarters are called, the Watchtowers stand guard. Between the worlds we stand, in a place that is not a place, at a time that is not a time. The circle is cast. So mote it be!”
The Watchtowers are important precisely because they connect us to this long history of magical rituals. When something is used the same way for a long time, it builds up power. The advantage of this for the beginner is that it requires less experience on their part to get the Watchtowers to do their jobs.
Be sure, however, to send them away when you are done with the Circle.
In most modern Wiccan and Western Mystery traditions, you start at the East.
- The Sunrise: The East represents the dawn, new beginnings, and the rising sun. Starting here symbolizes the “birth” of your ritual or sacred space.
- Element of Air: It is associated with the mind and communication, setting the mental intention for the work ahead.
The Exceptions:
While East is the standard, some traditions start elsewhere based on their specific focus.
North: Many Celtic-based traditions or “Earth-centered” paths start in the North because it is the place of the greatest power, the home of the ancestors, and the direction of the Element of Earth.
South: Occasionally, traditions focused heavily on “The Way of the Sun” or solar energy might start in the South at the sun’s highest point.
Your Location: Some practitioners in the Southern Hemisphere flip the correspondences (starting in the North for the sun or East for the dawn) to better align with their local climate and seasonal flow.

Ritual Tips:
- Movement: When “opening” your circle or calling the quarters, always move Deasil (clockwise).
- When “closing” your ritual and thanking the spirits for their presence, move Widdershins (counter-clockwise) to unwind the energy you have built.
- Visualizing: As you call each direction, imagine a pillar of light in the corresponding elemental color (Yellow for East, Red for South, Blue for West, Green for North)
